sometimes she got lost
when he held her—
when he held her
made her wonder
did he know what he was holding
holding only a body,
skin and hair
arms and legs
and chest and skull
with two brown marbles
through which light could pass for vision;
but did he see?
her emptiness,
did he feel it?
when he held her did he hold her
like a nearly-lost balloon?
like he knew she’d be gone soon
or like she’d already slipped right through
his fingers?
if he didn’t, then no matter how he held her,
she’d already slipped right through his fingers.
